Women of Encouragement

The other day I saw that a fitness coach that I have been following for over a year on Instagram and Facebook had posted a video on Facebook about women and encouragement.  You can see Amanda’s video here.  The short story is that people have been making ugly comments to her social media posts.  It got me thinking about this verse…

“Don’t use foul or abusive language.  Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”  Ephesians 4:29

And these verses…

“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.  For as members of one body you are called to live in peace.  And always be thankful.”
Colossians 3:14-15

To be honest with you, when I started following some of the women that are now my fitness heroes I had thoughts like:
“Wow!  They sure are brave to post a video of their workout on social media!” or “Wow!  Look at them posting their before and after pictures!  I’m not that brave or confident in myself.  What if someone makes fun of me?”
I kept following their journey.  Their journey gave me the motivation and encouragement to get my butt off the couch and do something about my health.  I consider myself a pretty outgoing person, but I had to really get out of my comfort zone when I started posting my workouts on social media or sharing my journey with my posts, blog, etc.  That was a HUGE step for me!  It has been worth it though.

Fortunately, most of my followers are people that I actually know.  I haven’t really had the reach through social media that other people have.  I’m not a celebrity.  I haven’t had to worry too much about negative comments on social media.  You can be sure that I have read other peoples comments though.  It seems that as social media has grown, the ability to hide behind our electronic devices has grown too.  It’s given us a boldness and a sense that we can say whatever we want no matter how ugly.  I have seen that people feel like it’s okay to say whatever they want even if they have never met that person or have a personal relationship with that person.

Over the past few months we have seen so much ugly in our world.  Why would you want to add to it or be a part of that?  Be a woman of encouragement.  Be an influencer for good.  Many times when people make their ugly (and very hurtful) comments or posts on social media it’s because you yourself are struggling with insecurities.  That mom of  ___ of kids is getting her butt off the couch and doing something good for her and her kids.  I’ve had a friend that has made a passing comment to me saying “hashtag fitmom” in our conversations.  If you follow me on Instagram you know that I use that hashtag and a few others whenever I post my fitness pictures.  I know this friend’s heart and I know that she loves me and I’m sure that she isn’t trying to be mean, but I am doing something positive for me and my girls.  Our words can cut deeper than we realize (or maybe some of us do).

“In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.   But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.  And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire.  It is a whole world of wickeness, corrupting your entire body.  It can set you whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.”
James 3:5-6

I will tell you this.  Since I am now 44 years old (crazy, huh?), I don’t care anymore what people think.  You can laugh or make fun of me all you want to my face or behind my back for all of my fitness posts or videos of my workouts.  In fact, get ready for this…I am about to try my hand at vlogging this fall with all of my upcoming races.  That’s right folks!  You’ll be seeing a lot more of this hot mess on social media!  I have one thing to say (okay I’ve said way more than that).  If all of my posts on social media will inspire or encourage just one person to get up and moving, then it has been worth it and I’ll keep doing it.  I’ve had several old students, parents, old and current friends that have messaged me or told me in person how my journey has inspired them to change.  I hadn’t posted as many workout videos lately and one morning one of the sweet ladies in my Facebook group asked where my posts were.  She had missed them and said that they were so inspiring.  I think they are a hot mess, but if it helps you, I’ll keep doing it.

Friends, we need to encourage each other.  Don’t be the hatred that is a part of this world.  Here are a few things to think of before you comment on social media:

1.     Is this the type of character that you want your daughters, nieces, students, etc., to have when they grow up?  Little eyes see all.
2.     Would you want others to treat your children like that?  Don’t be the bully.
3.     Do you have a personal relationship with this person?  Do you have the right to speak into their lives?
4.     If you want others to be kind to you, start first by being kind and encouraging to others.
5.     Remember the Golden Rule?  “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.”  This goes along with number #3, but if you don’t want to see ugly, hurtful comments on your social media then don’t do it to others.
6.     When you are ugly on social media, not only does the person whom you commented on see that post, but so do maybe hundreds of others.  Is that really the kind of character that you want to be known for?
7.     Is the reason that you are wanting to make a hurtful comment because you are struggling with your own insecurities?
8.     The next time you see a woman post or blog about her fitness make it a point to encourage her.  Congratulate her for getting off the couch and making a difference.
9.     Be kind and loving!!!

These are just some of my thoughts.  You have the power to make a difference in this world.  Why not use that power for good?  Be someone’s hero!

A Few of My Favorite Things: Part 2

In my previous post I shared with you a few of my favorite things to have pre-running, during running or post running.  I have just a few more to add to that list today.  J

Mophie
Since I will be trying my hand at vlogging during my upcoming races, I’ll need to make sure that my phone is properly charged.  I will especially need it since I run at least 3 apps simultaneously.  My friend suggested the Mophie Charger.  I almost got it on Amazon Prime Day, but held off.  I was glad because I was able to get it for free when I upgraded my phone.  It will also be great to have while I am walking around Disney and using my Touring Plans and MyDisneyExperience apps!  J

Feetures
I had never heard of these until my friend, Cori mentioned them a few weeks ago when she ran a race in Atlanta.  I decided to give them a try.  They are super comfy!  The important thing is that you have a good, comfy pair of socks to run with.  This will help you avoid blisters and hot spots.

Salt Tablets/Sticks
Until I started running over 6 miles, I didn’t think that I would need these.  I don’t know about you, but I SWEAT!!  The first time that I ran 10 miles I noticed that my eyebrows were crusty after the run (sorry for the TMI).  I immediately went home and looked into ordering Salt Sticks or something of that nature.  I chose the brand pictured below.  When I went for my 11 mile run yesterday, I brought 1 along with me.  I took it at about 3-4 miles.  I should have probably brought two.  I’m still testing this whole process out.  I’ll keep you posted.

Body Glide
Over the past 7 months, I keep hearing my running friends talk about how important having Body Glide is.  Up until a few weeks ago, I haven’t understood why.  Since I have been running in leggings, capris leggings, or my Sparkle Skirts, I haven’t needed it for the “chub rub” (sorry again for the TMI).  When I ran 10 miles a few weeks ago, I understood why I needed Body Glide.  I got chaffing from my sports bra.  Ouch!   I immediately visited my favorite site, Amazon, and ordered it.  I also went to Walmart and found this to try why I waited on my Body Glide to come in.  For my long run yesterday, I applied the Gold Bond pre-run.  I slipped the Body Glide (or For Her) into one of the pockets of my Sparkle Skirt (remember how fabulous and handy I told you that skirt was?).  The Body Glide was small and the perfect size for my Sparkle Skirt.  I didn’t even feel it.  I was glad that I did that too because I had missed a spot on the side of my sports bra and I was able to pull it out real quick during the run.  I am happy to report that I returned from my run chaff-free yesterday.  J

Reading Material
As I have mentioned before, I am new to this running thing.  This summer, I have taken time to do a little more research on the subject.  I’ve read articles from Runner’s World and Women's Running.  I also just finished reading this book.  It was from the 90’s, but I got a lot of good info from it.

I just ordered this book from Jeff Galloway.

It should be in any day.  It’s important to be informed about your subject.  I now have a stack of running, choral teaching and parenting books by my bed.  I have A LOT to learn!  J

Well, there you have it folks.  These are a few of my favorite things.  What are some of your must haves or favorite things pre-running, during running or post running?

A Few of My Favorite Things: Part 1

I’ve been running for 7 months now.  As I’ve gotten further into my training for my first half marathon, I’ve begun to do more research and also try out new things.  Here are a few of my favorite things to go with my running:

Running Shoes
I LOVE my New Balance running shoes!
I’ve tried all sorts of brands of shoes from Nike to Ascis to you name it.  The problem was that I was trying them out myself.  I have learned that it is SO important that you go to a good running store in your area and have them size you.  They checked my gait and then sized me with several different brands.  I also didn’t realize that although I am a size 8 normally, I should buy a size 8 ½.  Something else that I have learned is to make sure that you buy RUNNING shoes.  Even though you may cross train or do other things, you need to run in RUNNING shoes.  It was a little pricey, but for the first time I bought my shoes at the local running store.  I bought the same pair from Amazon on Prime Day the next time I needed them.  Speaking of that…how often should you get new shoes?  You should get new running shoes every 300-500 miles.  If your feet are hurting while you run, then it is time for a new pair.  There are several running apps that will help you track your shoe mileage.  This brings me to another one of my favorite things…

Running Apps
I am a weirdo and use several different apps while I am running.  I have mentioned in some previous posts that I have been using Jeff Galloway’s training apps.  I went ahead and purchased the bundle even though I have no desire at this time to do a full marathon.  I really like his apps.  My training schedule is already set up for me. Jeff promotes the run/walk interval to prevent injury and for many other reasons.  I have noticed that by running for 3 minutes and then walking for 1 minute, my race times have gotten faster.  He tells me when to run and when to walk.  I can also synch my exercise playlist to it and it will speed up or slow down my music based on whether I need to be running or walking.  I can also have it set to listen to podcasts if I want to.  I will now listen to podcasts on my 30 minute run and walk days and then listen to my music on the longer runs.  Do you need some ideas for good podcasts to listen to?  Check out my friends over at Joyful Miles.  They recently did a great post on different podcasts.

I also use MayMyRun and just recently started Runkeeper to track my mileage (I like to see the pretty map of my distance, pace intervals and elevation).  These also synch with MyFitnessPal.

Earbuds
When I first started running, I used regular headphones while I was running.  I started to get annoyed with the cords.  Some of my friends suggested these eCandy wirelessheadphones.  I love them and they were the best $18.00 that I spent.

FlipBelt
Around the time that I started running, one of my friends suggested the FlipBelt.  It is great while you are running.  You don’t feel it around your waist and it will hold your phone, tissues, keys, etc.  When I started running longer distances, I switched to a hydration belt so that I would have water with me.  It was okay.  I don’t like how it hits my race bibs on races.  I recently purchased this new FlipBelt & water bottles to fit in the FlipBelt.  I found it a little easier and I can wear it around my waist but under my shirt.  It took a little practice sliding the water bottle in and out of the slots, but by the end of my long run yesterday I was a pro.

Sparkle Skirts
These are the BEST things EVER!!  What is a Sparkle Skirt you ask?  Click the link and check them out!  They seriously don’t ride up on you while you are running.  They come with 3 pockets.  I use them for my key fab, phone and running snack.  They are great to wear for when I go to Disney too (those pockets ROCK!).  Oh and it helps that I look cute in them too!  Ha!  Ha!
I LOVE the hidden pockets!

Don’t forget to get a good Sports Bra and also change them out too.  Sports Bras,  like running shoes will wear out too!  In fact, running shoes and sports bras should never be hand-me-downs.  That will just cause injury for you.

Fuel
If you are only running a 10k (6.2 miles), you really don’t need fuel when you are running (I haven’t) if you are fueling properly before and after.  You will need to fuel during your run if you are running longer than 6 miles.  I am new to this, but the picture above is what I tried yesterday.  I ate one Stinger Waffle pre-run and then the GU at about miles 5 & 7.  I did a little at a time to test how it would be on my stomach.  I’ve read that if you take GU, it is important to drink water with it.  That will help your system digest it faster.  The GU was okay.  I think that I am going to try the Stinger Chewables next time.  I’ve also tried the Gatorade Chewables.  I bring both of my water bottles with me.  One has water and the other has vitamin water or Gatorade, etc.  I alternate when I drink them throughout the run.  It is important to test your body with Gatorade or Powerade or any fuel during your training.  Don’t wait until race day to try something new.  You don’t want any surprises with how your body reacts to it.
For my long run yesterday, I also left a cooler in my car with some vitamin water.  I chugged that when I was done with my run.  Make sure that you are also properly fueling after your run/race with the proper protein/fat/carbohydrate ratio.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of "A Few of My Favorite Things".
